This is a course on Jewish history, religion, philosophy and film. In this course we will draw on a variety of readings and films to explore the ideas and experience that have shaped Jews and Judaism primarily in the modern period. Topics include Enlightenment and Emancipation, Kabbalah Mysticism, Hasidism and Secularism, Zionism and Socialism, Immigration and Assimilation, Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, Denominationalism, Feminism, Identity, Peoplehood, Jewish Renewal, Jewish Humor and the future of Jewish Identity.
