  • With teaching, as with religion, sometimes it can be hard to know exactly what is going on. One of my first students ever was a young man who spent each class staring out the window, eyes half-closed, never speaking. I assumed he was tired or bored or both. I ignored him. When he finally did talk after many weeks, I discovered that he was, in fact, one of the most attentive students in the room. Clearly I had missed seeing him as he really was. As a result, I worked to become less quick to judge a(and dismiss) students based no my own preconceptions…
