  • How do we see Arab women in film? How do we (differently) interact with filmic images (of women)? What kinds of assumptions do we make about these words: Arab and women? Do we assume that all are Muslim? Veiled? Why? In this course, we will examine the assumptions we bring with us when we see images of Arab women and, by extension, Arab men. We will map a route through film theory, feminist theory and visual culture, screening films by and about Arab women as sites of resistance and not passive recipients of stereotypes. Along the way, we'll challenge our assumptions about Islam (in the Arab world) by engaging images of women in Judaism and Christianity.
