Wine as a religious symbol – “Valerie and Her Week of Wonders” (1970) – Wine in Films #43

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is a surreal Czech(oslovakian) film from 1970 full of symbols, so I was waiting for the wine to appear as one of them. My expectation was met when the devil looked down at the crowd in a church in the 17th minute of the film. Behind/above him is the dove, the symbol for the Holy Spirit; he is the seducing manipulator in this case. In his hands is a chalice of red wine, which could represent the blood of Jesus Christ, but it looks like he has malicious intentions with it.
