Film & Religion

This is an experimental website designed to research the connection between films and religion.

Design

We clustered films related to religion into the following categories. We ask you, the visitor, to suggest movies for inclusions.

• Cultures:The Cultures of Religion in Film
  Films re-interpreting ideas, values, figures and concepts borrowed from religious traditions.
  
• Extremes:Representing the Extremes of Religion
  Films parodying religions, describing extremities, dark sides, or the hereafter.
  
• Founders:Representing the Founders of Religious Traditions
  Films depicting a part of, or the full life (and death) of the founders of religious traditions, schools or denominations.
  
• Histories:Representing the Histories of Religion
  Films showing events of religious institutions, their development, leading figures, role in wider society and history.
  
• Sacred Texts:Sacred Texts and Films
  Films claiming to be direct representations or interpretations of either full length or portions of sacred written or oral texts.
  

Results

We will analyze the movies collected here at the end of November 2004 and will provide a short essay for each category on our findings.
